  • ASUS Blu-ray Prime, an affordable external Blu-ray drive.

    On Tuesday ASUS announced an affordable external Blu-ray drive for computers at Computex. Engadget reports that ASUS claims the Blu-ray Prime to be the "worlds only optical drive with 7.1-channel audio output." Click past the jump for all the tech specs.

    The Blu-ray Prime integrates an ASUS Xonar sound card to help achieve audiophile quality sound. The sound card contains a Cirrus Logic CS4398 DAC, a C-Media CM6631A audio processor and optical audio output. The Blu-ray Prime features a 600-ohm headphone amp to help drive power hungry headphones as well as a 114dB clean signal-to-noise ratio. The Blu-ray Prime is slated for Q4 release for approximately $199 US with a cheaper DVD version released in Q3. No word yet on the exact markets the Blu-ray Prime is coming to.
