I reported on Tuesday that Microsoft was expected to cut some jobs this week as part of a massive reconstruction process. Today Microsoft has announced that it will cut 18,000 people from its workforce. This is the largest layoff in Microsoft history.
The bulk of the layoffs will come from its Nokia acquisition it finalized earlier this year. Some 12,500 jobs will be cut, by the end of the year, effecting those brought over to the company from Nokia's "professional and factory positions."
In an email sent to employees, Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella says these cuts will allow Microsoft to become "more agile" and allow the company to move forward with teams that work more freely. Nadella also hinted that Nokia's Android X project could also come to a halt by moving "select Nokia X product designs to become Lumia based products running Windows." No drastic changes are in the works for the Surface Division.
