If you have not heard already, Microsoft will acquire Mojang for a cool $2.5 billion. The deal is not finalized yet but Microsoft, on Monday, announced that the deal is under way and, appending regulatory approval, could be finalized at the end of this year. Xbox's Phil Spencer is very optimistic about the deal as you can see in the video below.
Three key people behind Minecraft are leaving the company after the approval, Markus "Notch" Persson, the games creator, Carl and Jacob. Mojang has released a statement that pretty much confirms early rumors that Notch approached Microsoft about a buyout.
"He's decided that he doesn't want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance." according to the statement. "Over the past few years he's made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang."
Notch then had his own statement saying that he does not see himself as a real game developer and that he is leaving as soon as the deal is finalized. Microsoft on the other hand is extremely positive about the deal stating that it expects to make back the $2.5 billion by July 2015. Microsoft has been a huge backer of Minecraft recently so it only makes since for the company to acquire Mojang. Expect more news about the deal in the months.
